Farm Fresh To you Box – 05/28 and a Week in Review

Whew, it’s been a productive and hectic week. I have been just a busy-busy-busy in the kitchen this week, which is one of the reasons why this update is taking place at oh… Three-freaking-a.m. in the morning on Saturday/Sunday. So, due to the late hour and the absolute mush of my brain cells, this update is going to be heavy on the pictures, and low on teh words. I’m sure ya’ll get along just fine without my motor mouth anyhow.

I finally got fed up with all the apples and oranges that FFTY kept sending instead of my favorite season’s fruits – so I went in and added them to my exclusion list… and do you know what they did? They sent me a million tons of bananas instead. I think my head exploded just a little. In fact, all around I wasn’t thrilled with my delivery this week – but I’ve already hashed it out with them and I’m feeling better, so while I might vent a little, I’m still pretty happy with them.

So why was I annoyed, you ask? Well… they sent me lots of bananas (and don’t get me wrong, I love me some bananas) but I was hoping for apriums, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, oh – heck just about anything thats local and in season, that is not an apple or an orange. So okay, I get a bunch of bananas (heh… bunch…) but then they also sent me an icky musk melon, when I had musk melons excluded. AND they shortchanged me one pound of zucchini. Lamesauce.

But anyways, let’s get on with the weekly what-did-I-do-with-last-weeks box, shall we?

Last week I received:

This week I received:

  • 7 Peaches
  • A million Bananas (okay like 3 or 4 pounds, but still)
  • 1 lb Zucchini
  • 2 lbs Heirloom tomatoes
  • 2 lbs Red Potatoes
  • 1 Galia Melon (bleh!)
  • 2 pnts Strawberries
  • 1 lb Gypsy Sweet Peppers
  • 1 lb Snap Peas
  • 1 head lettuce
  • 1 lb Asparagus
  • 1 head broccoli
  • 1 head cauliflower
  • 1 bunch Rosemary
  • 1 lb Spring Onions
  • 1 bunch nantes Carrots

When I had it all gone through, and put away – I realized that I probably didn’t have quite enough to get me through the week – so I decided to go check out the Concord Farmer’s Market that my neighbor was telling me about. It has the big-big-big perk of being in the evening on thursday rather than some godforesaken early weekend morning. I called up one of my sisters to see if she was free and if you wanted to go with me, and faster than you’d think, I was showered, dresed and bookin it across town to meet up with her and check it out.

Unfortunately, it was super crowded and I don’t think that my sister shares my love for all things food, as I don’t think she had a very good time at the market. But afterward we grabbed some tacos, and hung out for a little while so hopefully she had a good time overall.

The market itself is huge, and there was a ton of people. It was a little frustrating to navigate, to be honest – there were people every where. It was also a little light on the organic produce, which was a little frustrating. There was however, one really, really neat thing that they don’t have at the Pleasant Hill Farmer’s market – and that was the honey vendor who had a display case with live bees in it. I tried to get a couple of pictures, but it was hard with all the people jostling me and the glare, et al.

There was also a nut vendor.

So here are the goodies I picked up:

Fava Beans

A bouquet of Flowers that my sisters son picked out for me

Some on the vine tomatoes, kale, and cauliflower

Some radishes, anise (fennel) and cilantro

Some more zucchini and some cherries

zukes and cherries

Some mushrooms

And some Balsamic Vinegar, Honey (of course), nuts, and fudge

As convenient as the Concord Market is as far as time of day/week – I don’t think I’ll be going back. It was too crowded to be fun, and was too lacking in the things I tend to shop for. I guess I’ll be hauling mah behind down to the Pleasant Hill one on Saturdays after all. Meh.
