Farm Fresh To You Box – 4/23 and a Week In Review

What an exciting week I’ve had – not only have I made some really wonderful goodies to post about, but I’ve also had a heck of a lot more traffic recently. Woot! Must be all that clean living, I’m sure. Anyhow – my weekly FFTY box arrived today and WOW – I’m so excited about what I’m going to make this week – I must have about a million ideas. I think that the leeks must have come from Giant Land though – that is the biggest Leek I’ve ever seen. Ever.

This is also my first week doing the Monster Mix size box – which has even more stuff than the box I received in last week’s box. It only cost a little bit more, and gave me a few more items that I wanted. Spring and Summer are my when my favorite fruits and vegetables are in season – so having a larger box is really letting me enjoy the variety of the season each week.

So last week, I received and made:

Not a bad haul, eh? :-) I still have one mango left that isn’t quite ripe enough to use just yet, and a few apples. We finished off some of last week’s oranges this afternoon, so I guess technically we still had oranges left, too. But otherwise, we used everything we recieved. Yippee! Still – I think this week will be even better.

In this weeks box I received:

  • 6 Small Artichokes
  • 4 Ginormous Navel Oranges
  • 4 small Avocados
  • 2 lbs Pink Lady Apples
  • 2 lbs Gold Blush Apples
  • 2 lbs Zucchini
  • 2 pints baby tomatoes(!)
  • 2 lb Red Norland Potatoes
  • 2 lb Yellow Onions
  • 2 Meyer Lemons
  • 1.5 lbs Leeks
  • 1 pint Strawberries
  • 1 bunch Green Chard
  • 1 lb Snap Peas
  • 1 lb Mixed Baby Lettuces
  • 1 bunch Italian Parsley
  • 1 bunch Nantes Carrots
  • 1 bunch Red Radish
  • 2 Green Garlic Heads

I’ve (as usual) already washed, mixed and divided the lettuces in to two batches for salads. I also added the radish greens to the salad mixes  just for fun. Miss Thing is already starting to pick off stray tomatoes. We both have been missing our fresh tomato fix. I’ve been trying to be better about not buying them (when they’re out of season locally anyways). Probably one of the catalysts for my signing up for a CSA was when I read this article about the treatment of tomato farm workers in Florida. It made me think a little more about the choices I was making by purchasing out of season tomatoes (and other produce!).  Actually – now that I think about it, I haven’t bought any fresh produce from the grocery store in over a month, aside from herbs.

Anyhow – I have a vague idea that one dish this week will be a soup of some kind – and I’ve got to figure out something to do with that backlog of apples… (Any ideas? Anybody? Halp?) Wish me luck!
