Rolled Wheat Hot Breakfast Cereal
I really love having a warm breakfast in the morning, but I’m not really a big egg fan. Mr. Man on the other hand, loves eggs, and would have them every day if he could, I think. I am, however, a fan of oatmeal – it’s one of my favorite quick & easy (cooked) breakfasts. This breakfast cereal however, is a really delicious and interesting alternative to Oatmeal. I picked up the Rolled Wheat at Whole Foods, although I’m sure there are a number of places that sell it. It looks a lot like Rolled Oats, only darker brown. When cooked, the texture is slightly chewier than regular oatmeal, and the flavor has a mild nutty tone. This recipe makes about 2 generous servings.
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Rolled Wheat
- 2 Cups Milk
- 1 tbls Butter
- 2 tbls Brown Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1/4 tsp Kosher Salt
- 1/8 Cup Dried Blueberries, or other small dried fruit
Method:
- In a medium sized saucepan, bring the milk and the butter to a low simmer over medium heat
- Stir in Rolled Wheat, vanilla, sugar and salt
- Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until most of the liquid has been absorbed
- Stir in Dried Fruit and simmer until fruit and wheat is at desired tenderness
